Be a part of the biggest race in our region. One that was nearly canceled in 2009 but for Lance Armstrong and SRAM coming in during the final hour and saving the race. Now this event, thanks a lot to the great organizers, is on the USA Cycling’s National Racing Calendar. This is a great chance for amateurs to race the same course and on the same day as the pros! From cat 4/5 to pro cat 1, both women and men, for the past two years have also seen Pro Tour riders attend from Radioshack and Garmin/Cervelo.

There are plenty of opportunities to race, but also as a spectator. Be a part of LIVESTRONG and the Lance Armstrong Foundation as a volunteer on Saturday, April 30 – email Rebecca here for more information. Whether you’re racing the 4 day stage race, or one of the amateur crit races on Saturday, this is one event you can’t miss!

Important News For Men 4,5 Riders

The 150 Men 4,5 Field Is Now Filled

The Men 4,5 WAITLIST is now open. There are spaces for 25 riders on the WAITLIST. You will be charged the full entry fee to get on the WAITLIST and moved into the Senior Men 4,5 field if and when a spot opens. If you do not get into the race, you will be refunded your entry fee.

Santa Teresa-San Miguel Road Race

Directions : Start will be neutral to Mcnutt, route will follow Mcnutt to Highway 28 to La Mesa, Cat C will turn around at Hwy 28 and 189 (4 way stop).

Cat A/B will continue on Hwy 28, turn right to Castillo Rd to Mesquite Dr. (192), turn left on 192 to Hwy 28 back to Artcraft, turn right on Artcraft and finish at the top of the climb. Cat A/B 55 miles, Cat C 40 miles.

Triathlete magazine senior editor Aaron Hersh studied the Giant Trinity Triathlete magazine senior editor Aaron Hersh studied the Giant Trinity Advanced SL, the Specialized Shiv and the Trek Speed Concept 9 Series to see how they perform not as time trial bikes, but as triathlon bikes.

The bottom line:

“I don’t know which of these bikes is most aerodynamic and I’m not going to guess, but the Trek Speed Concept is built around versatile, triathlon-specific geometry and is decked out in multisport-friendly accessories. The other two cannot accommodate some common triathlon fit preferences. The Speed Concept 9 Series’ combination of fit, adjustability, aerodynamics, drop-dead good looks and usability make it the best triathlon bike on the road today.”

Why a great bike fit is critical for triathletes:

“Our race is only just starting at T2 so a triathlon bike needs to fit comfortably to allow the athlete to run fast off the bike. No matter how aerodynamic, a tri bike must fit the rider, and these three machines all fit differently.”

Fit and adjustability:

“Traditional stems come in a variety of lengths and angles, which allow a single bike to accommodate many different fits, but the unique front-ends on the Shiv, Trinity Advanced SL and Speed Concept are not compatible with conventional stems. This means that each bike’s fit characteristics are determined only by the components its manufacturer provides.

The Shiv was designed as a TT bike, not a tri bike, and Specialized makes no apologies for that. It has a slack seat tube angle and a long reach from the saddle to the handlebars. … These fit attributes mean that the Shiv is only appropriate for athletes that ride in an old-school position, similar to a road time trialist. The Trinity Advanced SL suffers from the same lack of reach adjustment as the Shiv…

…the Speed Concept can fit nearly any triathlete because of its versatile aerobar attachment system. The frame is built around F.I.S.T. approved, triathlon-specific geometry. Instead of offering only a single-length piece to attach the aerobars, like the Specialized and the Giant, Trek’s six different stems allow it to cover the complete spectrum of fit preference. The highly adjustable Bontrager aerobar that comes with the Speed Concept 9 Series allows the position to be tweaked to perfection. Trek’s system not only matches the adjustability of a typical tri bike, but it exceeds it.”

Triathlon specific application:

All three of these bikes are aerodynamic marvels, but the Trek is a triathlon bike, and the other two are TT bikes that can be used for triathlon.

Triathlon has been steadily gaining popularity since 2004 with children as young as 3 years of age participating. I wouldn’t suggest that to parents out there but how many of us have taken the plunge into the sport? Triathlons nationwide are reporting registration numbers that have tripled in attendance in just one year. Last year Race El Paso sponsored its first local triathlon, Eagle in the Sun, which saw many local residents purchasing their first road bike, and diving in the pool to train. Have you thought about it? Perhaps you’re a runner so you think, how hard can riding a bike for 12 miles be? You swam competitively as a child so 400m is nothing, right? Not always, you’re older now, have a full time job or a family or in many cases, both. It takes many days of dedicated training in order to have a successful race. Still I highly recommend it to everyone out there who has ever had a fleeting thought about doing one.
I dabbled into the sport in 2008 at the Danskin Sprint Womens Triathlon in Austin. In the summer of 2007 I had not ridden a bike since I was a child, nor had I swam in years. Yet, I took up the challenge and bought my first road bike and set to training 5-6 days a week. I remember arriving race day being so nervous, wondering if I was setting up my transition station correctly, then having to wait so long for my age group to go. It was one of the hardest things I have ever done but also one of the most rewarding. I crossed the finish line all smiles.
These days I am all about cycling but I have that first triathlon to thank because if it hadn’t been for me doing that race I would have never found the sport that I love so much. So whether you want to register for the next race as a personal challenge, to meet new people, or to get healthy, know that you will forever be changed. Cheers!
